The theme of the story is that people should love other people for their personality and not for the things they have or how they look. The Twits did mean things to each other like for example Mrs.Twit put worms in Mr.Twit's pasta (I found this example on page 13, paragraph 3) and Mr. Twit said to Mrs.Twit "Hey, my spaghetti is moving". Mr. Twit put a frog in Mrs.Twit's bed to scare her away (I found this other example on page 15, paragraph 3) and Mr. Twit said to Mrs. Twit "What's the matter with you?".
