There are so may conflicts in this novel. The main conflict was when Leisel and her new family, the Hubermanns, help and hide a Jew, whose name was Max, from other Germans. They had to keep a secret and wondered if they should put themselves in danger for somebody else. In danger to be seen, they had to hide him in the basement. One very big obstacle for Hubermanns was when soldiers were checking people's basements. Max was nearly seen. Another big obstacle for Leisel was trying to keep all of this a secret from her friend Rudy Steiner. Since he was so nosy, she just had to tell him. A big obstacle for Leisel was the death of her old parents and her brother. This is a man v.s man story because Germans were tough at that time and tiny threats would be treated harshly. Also, Leisel was very bullied at school for not knowing how to read. This is also a man v.s self story because Leisel had to overcome her sadness an fear that she experiences when her loved ones died. Finally, this is also a man v.s nature story because all people are against death and it causes sadness.
