The Boy in the Painted Cave

Sang Yoon, Seung Jun, Bing and I were assigned to read chapters 3 and 4 from the book The boy in the Painted cave. I was the Discussion Director and I had to make questions for my group and my questions are:

    • Why wasn't Tao allowed to paint?
Tao wasn't allowed to paint because he wasn't the chosen one. Only chosen ones are allowed to paint.
    • If you were Too how would you survive in the forest?
I would hunt for meat, get water and sleep in caves to survive from the ferocious animals.

    • Did Tao ever return to the village?
He returned to the village because he needed food and caught the rabbit.

    • What was going through your mind when you read chapter 3?
What got in my mind is that  Tao was fighting with the wolf.

    •  Which chapter so far liked you? Why?
Chapter 3 because he goes hunting.

  • What kind of world is the Doldrums? and why is it so bad to waste time there?
  • Why does the guard arrest them all?
  • Why does the guard find everyone guilty?
  • Why does Milo get the packet on his bed?
  • Why does Milo want to go to the Dictionopolis?

Answers:
  1. I think that the people of Doldrums hate wasting time because there might be a lot of things happening in one day so if your late once you will be late the entire day
  2. I think that the guard is crazy
  3.  I think that the guard is crazy
  4. Milo gets the packet from someone who wants to help Milo to stop wasting time and sends him to a non wasting time town
  5. Because he gets curious

Caddie Woodlawn

This week I was the Conector. I conected the time when she and her Uncle Edmund went to the lake and her Uncle took Neo. This is One that I wrote:

My friend had a dog and her uncle had to take her even though she loved her dog like the most in the world. She was really sad because she had no idea how she would do without her dog.

This class we also recorded ourselves answering some questions the DD made up and answering our tasks. :)

My summary was this:

A lot of things happened during these 3 chapters. From getting a silver dollar to going to school. Cool, right? You read that I mentioned a silver dollar and you must think "so?" Well, back then, a silver dollar was worth a lot. She earned it when she made a bet with her Uncle Edmund. He cheated on the boat race so he gave it to her anyway. But she is still upset for cheating and Uncle Edmund is not making it any better by taking Nero away. He thought he would be a good hunter. Caddie misses him so much. And lastly, they went to school. Caddie loves school but it didn't start very well, due to a fight. The Woodlawns are getting prepared for winter. Goodbye sun, hello snow.

Today we made a recording again of our discussion.

I wrote the setting action for this section of the book and I wrote about the setting in chapter 5, which was my favorite. It was when Josie and Hollis went to the beach near the ocean and when Hollis found a rock and used it for luck. The events in this chapter begin when Josie and Hollis ride the sailboat and spend time at the beach. The key events happened when Hollis found the stone and when the two artists spend time at the beach and Hollis finally forgets the past, but slightly. Later on, the events end when Hollis remembers the drawing box that Steven and the Old Man gave her, and she figures out that if she wants to stay with Josie she has to go to school.

This is a picture I found in Google Images about Hollis's personality.

The Phantom Tollbooth

Over this week and three days we read up to chapter 5. We read about Milo's journey in Doldrums with the watchdog, about how he needs to concentrate to get to Dictionopolis but that he has many obstacles in his way. My job this week was the Illustrator. I drew how Milo and the watchdog get arrested for no apparent reason by the guard who found everyone guilty for no apparent reason.

My job was to be a illustrator. In this book there was a time that i really liked it was when Josie and Hollis were going to have Chinese but then the woman that brought the food, saw something. She saw one of Hollis's pictures then she asked her to bring her all of the pictures she had drawn. The whole table was soon filled with piles of pictures and the woman was amazed. She was an art teacher and she told Hollis that she had never seen something like this before. The woman was very happy to see wonderful drawings.

That is why i chose to draw a picture of Hollis's pictures because in my mind i was thinking about a kid that is very creative and reflects on her life.

The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatly Snyder

Book: The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatly Snyder
Number of pages assigned for the week: 34 pages
My Job: Discussion Director
Description of my findings in the perspective of my job:
Why would the Professor be curious about April, Marshall, and Melanie playing in his storage yard?
Maybe he is surprised by their creativity and imagination, and their boldness to trespass his property without fear of being discovered by him.
What does "It was a real smile, small and quick, not he gooey kind she usually used on grown-ups" tell you about April?
It shows that April enjoys faking sweetness to adults.
What does the author mean by "she had a notion he wouldn't fool easily"?
Aprils like to seem especially sweet and innocent in front of adults, most are fooled into believing this but something about the mysterious and all knowing nature of the Professor makes April feel as though he will see right through her.
Why was Melanie almost speechless when she met April?
Wearing false lashes and fur, Melanie had never seen anyone let alone a peer dressed so glamorously.
What does the author mean by "Melanie was beginning to understand about April's frozen spells, and how to thaw her out"?
"Frozen spells" mean that April tries to appear as a cool and glamorous Hollywood daughter-of-a-star but Melanie knows that by playing imaginary games and reading she can reveal the true creative, free-spirited April, in other words ,"thaw her out".
For next day two we will read: 25 pages

On literature circle I am in a group with Andrea and Tara. We are reading a book called Pictures of Hollis Woods. We made a deal to read five chapters each week. Which really means that every day two we read 5 chapters of the book. Since our group member Tara has a lot of activities to do each week she committed to read 4 chapters every day two. This means that everything she does not get to read she will on the break that is coming up. Last week my job was to be a connector. I connected the book to one movie that has a very similar topic, and that really reminded me on that. This week my job is to be a discussion director. This means that i will ask questions, have some opinions, and many other things to keep our communication good, and with the topic.
I'm reading the boy of the painted cave with Sang yoon, Seung jun and Alexandre. Next week we will read up to chapter four. After we read up to chapter four I will need to summarize the two chapters we read.

Pictures of Hollis Woods - Discussion Director

Name: Mai
Subject: English
Book: Pictures of Hollis Woods
No. of Pages: 2 Chapters
Job: Discussion Director

From the perspective of the Discussion Director:

What I wrote about the book Pictures of Hollis Woods is that Hollis is a twelve year old girl that gets different foster homes from time to time. Some of the questions that I had about Hollis and her life are:

1. Predict whether Hollis's personality will/ will not change throughout the time when she stays with Josie.
-- I think Hollis will get a softer personality when she stays with Josie.

2. How did you feel when you read that Josie was an artist that looked like a moviestar? Did you think that Josie would be this way?
-- What I felt when I read this is that Josie is not a normal painter, maybe she used to have a career and gave up.

3. Have you ever been connected to a body of water like Hollis was to the Delaware or like Josie was to the Atlantic Ocean?
-- I have never been connected to a body of water in this manner, so I do not know how it feels. If you "had" a river, what would you feel like.

These were examples of my questions for this week, look out for my post next week!

When the people of his clan find out about him making cave paintings, they send him away on his own with an injured wolf cub.
