The bully

How does the character of Tony change throughout the short story?
In the beginning of the story, Tony starts of as a bully, but as the story advances and they become adults Tony stops bullying Roger. Tony, as a grown-up is crippled and in a wheel chair, Tony empathizes with Roger, because he believes this is how his bullying made Roger feel, as if he had no power, and could not do anything to stop the bullying. Being in the wheel chair made him realize how he made his victims feel, and made him decide to stop bullying people.

How does this change affect Roger?
Seeing Tony makes him see that Tony feels the same way as he did when he was bullied, he does not laugh at Tony, but he tries to make tony feel better by offering Tony to go out for lunch. Seeing Tony, did not make Roger happy, instead he ignored what Tony did to him before and tried to help him.

What do you think Tony means when he said, "I guess you're thinking, 'What goes around comes around?'”
I believe that Tony meant, that him being in a wheel chair is a consequence for bullying Roger as a kid. That him bulling Roger was a bad thing, and that bad things come back so because Tony bullied Roger he ended up in the wheel chair.

Why do you think the author wrote this story? What message did the author wish to convey?
I think the author wrote the story to show that people do change over time, and that people learn from their mistakes. I also think he wrote the story because he won’t people to know that bully is not right, it makes people feel helpless and insecure and nobody would want to be bullied.

The Bully Discussion Director-Edwin Nyirenda

The Bully
Discussion Director-Edwin Nyirenda
Task:
The task in discussion director is to make or answer some questions that your group would like to discuss.
The questions have to be related to the topic and relevant.
This was my job but this time i was answering the already made questions.
Discussion director:
Question number 1:
How does the character tony changer throughout the short story?
Ans: Throughout the story Toney changes both physically and mentally. He changed physically because as it said in the passage he used to be a buff and a strong big guy but throughout time he got skinny and didn't look so masculine. He changed mentally because he used to be very, rude and dominant, he was high tempered and had no manners and no respect for people, but now he is calm and very respectful by showing how nice and well-mannered he is by speaking like a gentleman and not raising his voice as he he did in high school when he was bully. These answers were answered based on my perspective of the novel.
Question number 2:
How does this change affect Rodger?
Ans: From my point of view I believe this affects Rodger positively. This is because stayed positively and didn’t express negativity toward the Toney. He also didn’t behave rude he just minded his own business and moved on with life, but if hadn’t stayed positive and behaved negative he wouldn’t be the better person at all and he would ultimately become a bully too possibly going in the direction Toney did.
Question number 3:
What do you think Toney meant when he said, “I guess you’re thinking, “What goes around comes around”?
Ans: I think Toney mean that what you do and say to someone or something can change your whole life just as much as you did there’s but differently and you never how. Its it basically saying with every action(the action being Toney bullying Rodger) There is a reaction(That’s when Toney got badly hurt and lost his legs and putting him in defenseless and unprivileged stage in life).
Question number 4:
Why do you think the author wrote this story? What message did the author want to convey?
Ans: I think the author wrote this story to show how things that you did in the past can affect how you will have people thinking of you in the future. In the end Rodger became the better person just by minding his own business and forgetting about the past he focused.

The Bully
Blog post #4

The short story The Bully is about the reunion of a man, Roger Kiser, and of his middle school bully, Tony Claxton. The bully has changed from a big, strong bully to a thin and immobile man. He cannot use his legs at all.

Question #1: Throughout the story, in which Tony is mentioned as a child and as grown man, his character changes. First, he is talked about as a bully. He appears as a kind of tough guy that would enjoy making fun of you or picking a fight with you. However, as Roger gets to know the man as he is now, the readers view on Tony changes to a thin, pleasant and helpless man. He seems to regret his decisions and the way he treated Dean back in middle school.

Question #2: As Roger realized how Tony had changed, his view on the man changes along with his approach to his past bully. He stops thinking about his old bully as the kind of unpleasant show-off that he used to be, but he realizes how much the man has changed. So instead of ignoring him and hating him, he decides to help Tony and his helpless wife Barbara.

Question #3: As Roger helped Tony into the van, the disabled man stated "I guess you're thinking 'What comes around goes around.'" I think the man was referring to how he had bullied Roger as a child. He was trying to express that what you do has an effect on you, it always comes back on you. For example he was bullying people and now he was being "bullied" by life.

Question #4: In my opinion Roger Dean Kiser, the author of the short story, wrote the piece for several reasons. First of all, I think he was trying to express how people can change. For example Tony had changed from a bully to what sounded like a relatively nice person. I also think that the story was written to convey that if you do something bad, don't be upset when something bad happens to you and according to the quote "what comes around goes around" it will happen. Whatever you do will come and kick you in the back one day.

Disscusion director- The Bully

1. How does the character of Tony change throughout the short story?
Tony changes through the story drastically. From a buff and mean bully he was in the Middle School he changes to a nice guy who is good to people. Tony bullied Roger when they were kids, but when they grew up and met at the restaurant he was nice and polite.

2. How does this change affect Roger?
Roger realizes that Tony feels bad for what happened when they were kids. He thinks it's sad that Tony is in a wheelchair but is still feeling unhappy because Tony bullied him in the Middle School.

3. What do you think Tony meant when he said, "I guess you're thinking, "What goes around comes around"?
I think this means that Tony got what he deserved because he was mean to Roger. Now we can see that this theory might be correct that if someone is mean the meanness will come back to him some day.

4. Why do you think the author wrote the story? What message did the author want to convey?
He wanted to tell us that bullying is not okay and then something bad might happen. This is why being nice is always good. Some things can be accomplished with kindness which cannot with force.

The Bully - Roger Dean Kiser

This is a new story it's about the quote what goes around comes around.

Questions:

How does the character of Tony (bully) change through the story?

Tony is the bully, he was buff and mean completely able before but now he is thin, unable and nice to people.

How does the change affect Roger?

Before since Tony was mean so Roger would have nothing but hate against Roger but now that Tony is disabled Roger feels sorry for him.

What do you think Tony meant when he said "I guess you are thinking what goes around comes around!"?

I think he meant that since Tony was mean before and hurt other kids he is now disabled because of that. He sent bad in to the world, something bad happen to him now.

What do you think the author was trying to convey through the story?

I think that the author was simply saying that one day your deeds will pay back so good deeds will result in a good payback and bad will be a bad payback. Now it's your choice whether to have a good or bad future and know that your future will be decided by your deeds that are done now.

Discussion Director-The Bully

We read a short story four pages long and my group all have to be discussion directors. It is about a guy named Roger Kiser who is reunited with his seventh grade bully Tony Claxton.

1.How does the character of Tony change throughout the short story?
Tony used to be a bully and he bullied this guy a lot named Roger. And they happen to see each other in a restaurant with Tony's wife. Tony was a really mean bully but as we go through the story, he is on a wheelchair and is a really nice guy to Roger.

2. How does this change affect Roger?
Roger realizes Tony feels almost the same as Roger did when he was bullied so he decides to help Roger with his wheelchair problem to get into the car.

3.What do you think Tony meant when he said, "I guess you're thinking, 'What goes around comes around'"?
I think it means he had to pay for what he did to Roger in school. He is in a wheelchair so he now knows what it felt like to be Roger in seventh grade.

4.Why do you think the author wrote the story? What message did the author want to convey?
He wanted to tell us that people change throughout lives like if they were really bad people in school or something like that, they can turn into good people who do not want to cause any harm.
Discussion Director:

Question number one: The character of Tony in my opinion changes because of two things, firstly because his legs do not work so he is in a wheelchair so he cannot do much bullying anymore and because he now has grown up and decided to be serious.

Question number two: The change affects Roger because now he wants to be friends with Tonu

Question number three: He meant that when you do something bad or good to someone it turns around to you.

Question number four: What the author wants to say is that you have to be nice to each other because things are always changing and you never if someone is going to turn bad or ogod.
