Zona Zamfirova

Zona Zamfirova by Stevan Sremac

I like this book.
It's about a young woman, Zona, who falls in love with a poor man that her parents don't like. They want her to marry Manulać, who comes from a very rich family, just like Zona, because they think rich people have to marry rich people and poor people have to marry poor people.

Zona is the prettiest girl and one of the most rich girls in town. Mane, the guy she falls in love with, is the prettiest boy in town but is poor and adults don't like him. He falls in love with her too and his mother is not happy about it either. She thinks he has no chance with her so she makes a list of girls that he has to chose from.

Zona and Mane are sadder and sadder that they can't marry each other. Mane's aunt Doka talks to Zona's mom and aunts about it  but they end up in a fight because Zona's mother Tašana doesn't want to hear a word about her daughter marrying Mane. Now Zona's parents are even more mad at her but soon they find out that Manulać's parents don't want him to marry Zona. There was only one dialogue between Zona and Mane in the whole book and he was trying to apologize for what his aunt said to her parents. But Zona's aunt Taska told her how she is not allowed to marry him and made her believe that she is the best and prettiest of all her friends and that he's bad and doesn't deserve her.

Now Mane is mad at her. He plans a trick and pretends to steal Zona. He dresses his friend up like a girl and acts it out. At that time it was a big shame if a man kidnapped a girl. He only wanted to make her be embarrassed.  Many people see this and believe it but it's not true. The whole town starts talking only about that and it also appears in the newspaper. But when Zona's aunts take her for a walk everybody's confused.

The message of this book is how people segregate rich and poor but that love is much stronger than money. Even though her aunt Taska tried to convince her Mane bad for her, Zona was still in love with

This book was very hard in general because it has many words that are only from the south of Serbia. Many of the words I didn't understand but I picked two. I did understand more than a kid usually would because I've been in the south of Serbia many times. Izmećarka is a female servant. Daskalica means teacher.
