A Long Walk to Water

I have read a book entitled A Long Walk To Water written by Linda Sue Park.  The book is based on a true story  and is written in an emotional way.  I have read all 120 pages of the book in sadness of what was occurring in the section I was reading.  The main character of this adventurous book is Salva Dut.  In the beginning of the book he is eleven years old and has to leave his family behind because of the war.  It doesn't really say how old Salva is in the end of the book but I think he is thirty-three. The story has no main setting.  The book does not really concentrate on where it is happening except a few times.  The settings were Southern Sudan (the time was before Sudan broke up into South Sudan and Sudan); Ethiopia; Kenya; and Rochester, New York.  I will give an example of all of these settings below.

  1. Southern Sudan                        Southern Sudan, 1985                                                                      Salva sat crossed legged on the bench.  He kept his head turned toward the front, hands folded, back perfectly straight.
  2. Ethiopia:                                   Itang Refugee Camp, Ethiopia, 1985                                                  "Mother! Mother, Please!"  Salva opened his mouth to call out again.
  3. Kenya:                                     Ifo Refugee Camp, Kenya, 1992-96                                                     Salva was now twenty-two years old. For the past five years he has been living in refugee camps in northern Kenya: first at the Kakuma camp, then at Ifo.
  4. Rochester, New York:             Rochester, New York, 1996-2003                                                        Salva had been in Rochester for over a month and still had not seen a single dirt road.

I hope you enjoyed reading my blog post and decide to read the book yourself.
