The Golden Compass

The Golden Compass

Philip Pullman

I am reading The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman, for my quarter 3 book report. Out of the total 399th pages, I have read up to the 40th. Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon or Pan for short who live at Oxford, Jordan College, where they sneak into the Master's retiring room, where they have never been  before and are not supposed to go because it is no girls allowed. But Lyra wants to see it, so they proceed an overhear that Lord Asriel would be making a brief visit soon. When Lord Asriel arrives Lyra saves his life by not allowing him to drink from the wine left on the table, by the Master  because it was poisoned. Then he, Lord Asriel tells scholars and Master about the Northern Lights and this thing called the dust, while the Master and librarian discuss how he could have known about the poisoned wineFrom what I currently know this novel takes place in the present. The setting of this novel is Oxford, a university made up of many colleges such as, Jordan College. An example from the novel to prove the setting correct is; "Jordan College was the grandest and richest of all the colleges in Oxford. It was probably the largest, too though no one knew for certain.". This quote is on the 33page of the novel, in the first paragraph.

  1. Great blog post Ana! The book sounds very interesting. Throughout the post, the way you wrote it made me think it was placed in the 16th century. It was written in a very interesting way that made me want to hear more. A question I would like to ask is that when (as in a year or century) did this book take place. Another one is how did Lyra and her daemon pan stop or convinced Lord Asriels to not drink the wine. Again great blog post and can't wait to read and comment on your next one.
