Later on most of the story is outside the fence of their city and in laboratories. Jeanine Mathews is dead but Evelyn took over the plan to kill the factions. Erudite thinks there is nothing else beyond the fence, but Tris thinks there is a way to stop the death serum from going around and killing everyone, even the Divergent. Jeanine Mathews was working on a serum so powerful that it could kill the Divergents, which are normally imune to the serums.
The first sentence of the book refers to the Erudite Headquarters: I pace in our cell in Erudite headquarters, her words echoing in my mind: My name will be Edith Prior, and there is much I am happy to forget.
