The Hideout - Eve Bunting

I am reading a book called The Hideout. This book is written by Eve Bunting. I am at chapter 5 page 55 of 158. The book looks like:

So far, the main character Andy has left his home and decides to live with his father in England. He starts his journey in San Francisco because of his mom. His parents are divorced and his mom is remarried to a guy named Paul. Andy doesn't consider Paul his father, he loves his real father more than his real mother. Until now, Andy somehow got his hands on a key which belongs to a celebrity suite in a hotel, so since he doesn't have any money he secretly stays in the celebrity suites, on his first night a couple also secretly starts to use that suite but stopped because they felt like it was already being used by someone else. Andy also becomes friend with an old couple named Mr. and Mrs. Saint, they are very kind to him. Now the question with everyone is will Andy get to his father in England or not. Stay tuned to find out.

The words I found hard to understand were:
From chapter 4 page 35, tennies
it meant tennis shoes one sentence this is used in is: "hey go where your tennies, we are going to play a match of tennis."
From chapter 3 page 34, skewed
it meant suddenly changing directions or position one sentence it can be used in is: "The cheetah skewed across the forest."
