The book takes place in a futuristic society in Chicago. The conflicts in the book are man vs society and man vs man.The main conflict is Man vs. Society.

A man in the futuristic society depicted in Divergent is limited in his choice and his actions, he has to accept the given order. While he has some freedom when deciding which faction to join, once in the faction, he has to accept the role he is assigned by the society. He cannot question the order or disobey the set rules.

The society is divided by factions.  Each of the five factions value one virtue and carry different duties in the development of the society."Erudite" is in charge of education and research, they provide the society with lawyers and doctors. "Abnegation" is the governing faction that rule the society and decide on changes."Dauntless" is in charge of the security, they provide the weapons and guard the city."Amity" grow the city's crops, they provide the food for the city"Candor" is in charge of law and justice.

The main problem is that the society rules its members. Their individual freedoms, such as freedom of choice, freedom to question and freedom to make decisions and changes, are limited.  They are tested on their skills and assigned for a specific faction.  They are supposed to obey the rules of the said faction and do not question the set order.The conflict is shown through the eyes of the main character, Beatrice.  She is superior to the others, she has aptitudes for several factions and starts to understand the limits and restrictions the society puts on people and their choices. 

Man vs. Man.

We find out about conflicts in factions and selfishness and cruelty of the members of factions and society. While the given organization of society should provide peace and order in people’s lives, the selfishness and greediness of its members result in struggles and fight.  Erudite, the faction consisting of intellectuals and scholars, have devised a plan to overthrow Abnegation and govern the city themselves. As their plan involves attacking Abnegation, they joined forces with Dauntless leaders who will provide the weapons for the attack. In order for their plan to work, Erudite, being the intelligent and most technologically advanced faction, have developed a "Simulation Serum". When under the Simulation Serum, the Dauntless members will be programed to attack and kill hundreds of Abnegation members. Dauntless leaders have trained and prepared the Dauntless members for the attack, without the Dauntless members knowing what would happen. When Abnegation is weak and in no state to continue governing the city Erudite will take over, with Dauntless to protect them.

Being Divergent, Beatrice is immune to the Simulation Serum. When Erudite released the Simulation Serum, it couldn't get control of her. She stole the technology that controlled the Simulation Serum and jeopardized the plans of Erudite leader Jeanine Mathews.
