Obstacles the Protagonist Goes Through-Swallows and Amazons

Swallows and Amazons

351 pages
Arthur Ransome

The  obstacles that the protagonists have to go through in the book Swallows and Amazons are all because of Captain Flint. That is why the four adventurous Swallows team up with two tomboys the Amazons in alliance against the hated Captain Flint (who is also the uncle of the two Amazons). Captain Flint is the antagonist in the story because he keeps blaming the four innocent Swallows for messing with his houseboat (which he stays in in the summer) and he has the entire area believing that they are the guilty ones. For example on the day that the Swallows set sail to their 'desert island' early on in the book they saw the captain waving his fist at them as they passed. He told every body that the Swallows had set of fireworks off on his roof, but in reality it wasn't them. Events like this  go on for a while until Captain Flint's house boat is robbed! The boat was completely turned upside down with his important work stolen. For the crime he blamed the Swallows again, even though they are innocent. To prove themselves innocent they have to find the stolen treasure and return it. These are the main obstacles, but the four children also had  some problems with the Amazons during all of this...
The Swallows had some issues with their allies before their alliance. The Amazons started of as enemies before they managed to get together and talk with the Swallows. The Amazons were also the ones that caused all these major problems for the Swallows, they were the ones that stole feathers from Captain Flint's houseboat, they were the ones setting of the fireworks on his roof but they were not the ones who stole the important work. Along with raiding the Captain's houseboat they also raided the Swallows camp and tried to shoot them with their arrows, for the two tomboys were the first ones to stay on Wild Cat Island (the island were the four Swallows were staying) and wanted to keep it to themselves (even though they were not there at the time the four were staying there). But luckily the new campers had enough sense to  talk their problems out instead of fight, and that was when the alliance against Mr. Flint was formed.
