School was finished and he had a summer vacation. Jack Gantos had a bleeding problem when he gets scared or spooked and blood runs down his nose. Jack's dad was in the Japanese navy. His uncle Will used to work in the country road department. Jack got grounded because he was watching a movie about war and he wanted to be a marine to help in the war (his dad had many guns from the war). Jack has a best friend called Bunny, Jack escapes from his house to go with his friend on Girl Scout Fire Patrol and see if Hells Angels don't burn the empty houses.
