Summary:

Eva Marie Olinski is head of The Souls, four sixth graders participating in the academic bowl. When the commissioner of Education of New York pulled out the question “What is the meaning of the word calligraphy and from what language does it derive?” Noah Gershom pressed the buzzer, who had a flashback where he remembered that calligraphy meant beautiful writing. The Souls had won the Middle school championship before.
The second part of the question was given “What is the name given to the portion of the North Atlantic Ocean that is noted for its abundance of seaweed, and what is its importance to the ecology of our planet”. Nadia Diamondstein buzzed, who also has a flashback….

Award:
This book won the Newbery medal in 1997 for the excellence in American children literature.
