After being falsely accused of stealing the sneakers of legendary baseball player, Clyde "Sweet Feet" Livingston, an overweight boy named Stanley Yelnats is sent to Camp Green Lake, a camp where juvenile delinquents "build character" by digging holes in a dried-up lake. Stanley blames his "no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather", Elya, who mistakenly broke a promise to Madame Zeroni, a one-legged gypsy. After failing to win the hand of an empty-headed beauty named Myra, Elya forgets Madame Zeroni's threat to curse him and his descendants and sets sail to America where his misfortune begins.
