The Ramayana

Author: Priority Publications
Pages: I read 41 pages and the book has 228 pages.

I really like this book because its an old Indian myth which I got as a present from the Indian Embassy.

My favorite Quote is:
Rama said, "O fair Sita, my duty is to protect the good and destroy the evil. I shall always stand by the truth and can sacrifice my life to protect righteousness."
This is my favorite quote because it shows how caring, open minded and responsible Rama is and what he can do to protect what is right.

Summary:
As Rama got married so did Laksmana, Bharata and Shatrughna. As soon as Parashurama knew that Rama had broken the bow of Lord Shiva he decided to punish Rama so he challenged Rama to wield the bow of Lord Vishnu. Rama succeeded to wield the bow and Parashurama realized that Rama was not an ordinary human. Years passed by and Rama grew up. Dasharatha now felt like Rama was ready to be made as the new king. Everybody was filled with joy except Kaikeyi's maid. The maid told Kaikeyi that she and the others will be treated like slaves if Rama was king. Kaikeyi did not want that to happen so she met Dasharatha who promised her that he will banish Rama for 14 years to the forest and make Bharata the King. Dasharatha tried to persuade the queen but she did not agree, so the king had no choice but to do as he promised. Rama had a big heart so when he heard this news he was not sad or disappointed. Laksmana and Sita insisted to come along, so Rama took them along. The people of Ayodhya were very sad and requested for the beloved prince to stay, but he didn't. Rama with the help of Laksmana built a house in forests of Chitrakuta. Dasharaths's health was getting worse and he died. This was all from a curse that was given from the blind parents of a boy who  was killed by Dashartha's arrow by accident. When Bharatha found out that Dasharatha had died and Rama was not there he was very angry and immediately went to Rama to get him back to Ayodhya but Rama did not come back because he wanted to keep his promise and only return after 14 years. So Bharatha took Rama's sandals and ruled over Ayodhya by keeping the sandals on the throne. Rama, Laksmana and Sita left their beautiful house and continued their journey. After a while they came to Sage Agastya's Hermitage and stayed there. They met a vulture which promised to help them in the forest when they are in trouble. A demoness disguised as a beautiful women asked Rama to marry her but he refused so she tried Laksmana who refused too. The demoness got angry and raged towards Sita but Laksmana cut the nose of the demoness.
