The theme of this novel is believe in freedom. the reason it is that because the whole story is about a girl in the time of the holocaust so all the soldiers are taking the Jewish taking there freedom. another reason is that Ellen Annmarie best friend was about to be taken away Annemarie kept her freedom and help Ellen stay away from the Nazis.there weren't any specific quotes in this story but if there were they would be good ones.
