The main character in the  book Elijah of Buxton is Elijah, an eleven year old boy who lives in Buxton, Canada, a settlement of runaway slaves. He was the first child  in the area to be born free. He is really nice and friendly because he always says hi to everyone even if it is not his day. Elijah is also sensitive. He shows how sensitive he is when his mother continuously says to him that he is fragile because he cries a lot and becomes scared easily. For an example, at the beginning of the book Old Flapjack, the Preacher told Elijah a story about the new snakes in the woods and when he heard it, Elijah screamed loud and ran all the way home. When mom found out she called him fragile. Elijah is also hard working. When he promises someone something, no matter what, he always gets it done. For example, Elijah promised Mr. Leroy that he will get him fish for dinner. Elijah was fishing the whole day just to get the amount of fish that he promised to Mr. Leroy.
