The main character of the book Smoky the Cowhorse is a wild mustang. He is a jet black and a very smart horse. Somky is a fast learner. He learns from his mother and his own experiences in life.
One day Smoky was trotting around on the prairie when a lion attacked him from a rock. Smoky was saved by a rattle snake because he knew from his mother's experience he shouldn't touch it and this made him escape the lion and run off.
