The Mourning Emporium by Michelle Lovric: THE SETTING

Big Ben

I have finished this book (385 page), and am currently doing it for my book project.
My book is set in both Venice, Italy and London, England. The novel starts in Venice, Italy, where the ice flood has started. Instead of being the beautiful and peaceful place Venice used to be, it is now a disastrous wreck. It's streets are dark and gloomy, and the few citizens left after the 'half-dead disease,' caused by Il Traditore, look gloomy and full of unhappiness.

When Teo and Renzo aboard the boat, The Scilla, the difference is great. The atmosphere with the other orphans on the Scilla make the atmosphere that Teo and Renzo are used to much better. The boys aboard have no idea of Teo and Renzo's real reason of joining the Scilla.

Of course, when the seriously scary Ms. Uish comes to be the supervisor of the boat, things go haywire. The boat turns into a gloomy, icy boat. The boys and one girl, live life the hard way, until they manage to get rid of Ms. Uish and her creepy assistant.

When they get to London the city is VERY large, quite a shock to Teo, Renzo and the other boys. But, when the half-dead disease hits London, it's a very different place.

'As far as the eye could see, way out on islands of the lagoon, droplets of fog had frozen into a crystalline haze over the skeletal branches of trees.'
