Characters

The main characters in this story are: The Red Knight and the Abbess. The Red Knight is the leader of a mercenary group. His mercenary group is famous, due to many successful missions. The group is named the Bourc. The Red Knight is a young man - we know this from the sentence: “He was proud of his mustache, it did a great deal in hiding his age, or rather, his lack of it.” 

The Abbess is the woman that rules the big and rich abbey and its church in the fortress town of Lissen Carak. The Abbess is aged, but still good looking. She has been in the Abbey for a long time.

The Red Knight was hired by the Abbess to protect Lissen Carak from the Wild. The Wild is a dangerous forest zone with scary creatures in it, and recently started to spread towards the cities.

We know that the Abbess is a good leader and tries to protect her people, because she once said: “We protect it or we don’t, either way we tried.”
