The main character in the book is Sam. Sam is a boy who has just turned eleven. He has a learning disability, so he cannot read. His parents are dead, so he lives with his grandfather. He has just found a newspaper clipping that makes him wonder if he really belongs to this family. Sam is kind of brave, and he is could at making friends. On pages 52 and 53, Sam goes up in the attic where he had found the newspaper clipping before, he was not allowed to be seen doing this. On page 16 he sits down with a new girl, Caroline, at lunch, and they directly become friends. He became friends with her, because he needed her to read the clipping for him.
