Rules has exactly 200 pages and is written by Cynthia Lord.
The main characters are Catherine and David. Catherine is David's sister and a 12 year old girl who wants a normal life. She is a wonderful artist who can draw almost anything. She works hard on making rules for her brother, David, who is 8 and has autism. For instance on page 12 she made a rule for him to stop screaming when she said "maybe" the word David absolutely hates. Also on page 56-57 she helps David get a toy out of the fish tank that he dropped in the fish tank. There are other characters - some are friends and some are not. The rules that Catherine makes are for David to understand how to behave normally around other people. Since her friend, Jason cannot speak she makes "word cards" for him to communicate. Jason is a boy that goes to the same OT (occupational therapy) as David. She meet him while waiting for David at OT.
