Ella Enchanted
By: Gail Carson Levine
The book that I am reading for my book report is called Ella Enchanted. This book was written by Gail Carson Levine and won the Newbery Honor Award.
Protagonist: The protagonist in my story is Ella. Ella of Frell. Ella was born in the town of Frell and has lived there her whole life. Ella has black hair and she's very pretty. She likes to learn different languages of Frell and about the terrains nearby. The languages she learns include: gnomic, abdegi, ogrese, elfian and ayorthian. Ella's real name is Elanor just like her mother's. Ella grew up with her mother. Her father was always away on trading trips because he was a merchant. Their household had many servants and her favorite one was Mandy the cook. Later in the story we find out that Mandy was also Ella's fairy godmother. Ella is a very sneaky and likes playing tricks and jokes on people. She tricks people easily and she likes sneaking around the house. You wouldn't even hear her. Ella is put under a spell, by a fairy called Lucinda. Lucinda is a bit crazy and came up with this speall that everything Ella is told, she must obey. Of course later Ella realizes that ste spell is actually a curse. If you told Ella to wash the dishes she had to. Even if you told her to cut off her own head she had to do it. All thanks to Lucinda. Ella and her father did not get along. He thinks that she is clumsy. Ella's mother sadly died when Ella was 15, leaving Ella her necklace and nothing else.
Antagonist: The antagonist in the story is Lucinda. Lucinda is an unusual kind o fairy. She thinks that a curse is a gift. She is also mean and mischievous. She is probably one of the prettiest fairies in Frell but does not have a good heart. For an example, she put a spell on some giants when they got married, making them to always together, which meant they could not separate or go anywhere without each other. Lucinda ruined Ella's life so without Lucinda Ella would be fine.
Conflict: The conflict in the story is both man vs man, and man vs nature. Man vs man because Lucinda gave Ella the curse of obedience, forcing Ella to listen and obey anything anyone says.
Without Lucinda Ella would actually be free. Free to live a normal life. Instead she has to do what she is told even if that means kissing a frog, or eating spiders. Man vs nature because if Ella's mother Elanor had not died, Ella's father would not have sent Ella to finishing school, Ella would not have given Hattie her necklace, and finally Ella would not have to leave the people she loved, including Mandy.
