Holes

HOLES
by
LOUIS SACHAR

The book that I am reading for my book report is called "Holes" by Louis Sachar. This book won the John Newbery Medal.

The protagonist of this book is Stanley Yelnats. Stanley is a overweight (fat) boy that goes to middle school and kids usually teased him because of his size. Sometimes, even his teacher had cruel comments about him. Stanley weighs three time more than his other friend. Stanley Yelnats was not a bad boy. He was innocent for the crime that he was told on which was because he was at the wrong place in the wrong time. Stanley's dad was an smart inventor who had a lot of perseverance. He was also named Stanely Yelnats. Stanley's father's full name was Stanley Yelnats III and Stanley is Stanley Yelnats IV. The reason why Stanley was named Stanley Yelnatsis because everyone in Stanley's family liked the fact that "Stanley Yelnats" was spelled the same frontward and backward. So they kept naming their sons Stanely. As I am reading through the book, I think that Stanley is a responsible boy who ever gives up even though digging holes in Camp Green Lake can be very hard for him which I will explain in the conflict part.

The antagonist of this book is Camp Green Lake which is the setting of this book. It is the antagonist of the book because Stanley gets sent to to Camp Green Lake to dig holes everyday which is very hard to do. Stanley gets sent to Camp Green Lake for being a bad boy which he is innocent for.

The conflict of this book is Man vs. Nature which means Stanley vs. Camp Green Lake. As I said before, Stanley gets send to Camp Green Lake which is a camp that bad boys go to in order to be a good boy. Even though Stanley was innocent for his crime but he was still send there. Stanley has to dig a hole each day which must be five feet deep and five feet across in every direction which is very hard to do. Days in Camp Green Lake were really hot, the sun each day was burning hot. So that makes digging a hole everyday even harder. Stanley lives in tent D in Camp Green Lake. He is sent away from his parents. He had friends that he made during the first 2 days in Camp Green Lake. In Camp Green Lake, there were some very harsh rules, i.e every shower has to last 4 minutes with only cold water, after 4 minutes, the water immediately turns off. So Camp Green Lake is a big problem for Stanley and he still has to stay there for eighteen more months.
