It is such a good book, I cried so many times not because it is a very sad book, just for the fact that it is such a good book - yeah I know I am weird!
There are two settings in this book, one based around the boy's childhood in England which was very positive despite the tough conditions and the second setting is travelling through Europe during the First World War and experiencing watching people loose their lives.

Thomas turned 16 when World War One started in 1914 and he lied about his age to join the army to be with his brother.  The book describes the awful conditions in the trenches, especially that it was very muddy and wet.  This was a great contrast to his home which was a house in a pretty village with green valleys all around.

The last chapter of the book describes how Thomas prepares to leave for Budapest, as his last posting as he is determined survive the war and make it back to his home to look after his family.

  1. I started reading that book, it was too sad for me, I like comedy and happiness in a book not sadness and death. The first death, the father's, I thought
was the saddest, I stopped reading the book a little while after that, it just got too sad.
