The main character (the protagonist) is Max Murphy. He is 14 years old. He is a typical teenager, who sits in his room playing video games. He is very thin with no muscles. Example from the book: "of course he looks pale," snapped his father."He spends his whole life in his room!" (page 31). He is a bit spoiled at the beginning of the book. Example from the book: "....my friends get the new limited edition HELL HOUNDS - 3D and I get the garbage from a yard sale...". He has fox like hair.

The second main character is Max's uncle Ted. At the beginning he and Max do not like each other, (antagonists) but later they get to know themselves and get along well.

The uncle is a small red hair man with a lot of money. He is a smuggler. He deals with Maya artifacts. To Max he seems super strict. Ted keeps Max busy, he makes him work hard at his company. Max must rake and clean the garbage on the beach. Ted gives Max his own task while smuggling the Red Jaguar stone. He makes him feel useful and responsible. Example from the book: "maybe it is not such a bad idea. At least I'd know where you were. But you have to promise me to stay in your room...(page 101) He wants him to stay in his room with the night vision goggles on and observe the surroundings. 

Max's father and his brother Ted do not have very nice relationship. Example: uncle Ted says:" Your father is a hypocrite! In public, he denounces the black market, but in private he's been blackmailing me to get him a Jaguar Stone."
