One obstacle the Main Characters has run into was in the Old Forest the Hobbits were kidnapped by barrow wights but Tom Bombadil who is the master of the Old Forest helps them out and saves their lives from being killed. "the icy touch froze his bones, he remembered no more"(182)
Another obstacle is when the Main Characters go to The Mines of Moria and meet the Balrog where Gandalf the Grey fights the Balrog on a bridge but the Balrog's whip pulls him down and he falls down into the deep with the Balrog. "But even as it fell it swung its whip, and the thongs lashed and curled about the wizard's knees, dragging him to the brink" (431)
