The Hobbit - Post 4

Hello all, the book I am reading for my book report is The Hobbit (as I said before many times), by J.R.R. Tolkien. I read 150 pages out of 351, and so far its a great book.

(Since some of you put pictures from movies, I am adding one too. This is a part when Smaug the dragon is with Bilbo Baggins, the hobbit. Picture source: http://sciencefiction.com/2013/09/02/six-promo-images-desolation-smaug-2014-annual/)

The two obstacles (problems) the main characters ran into so far was when Thorin and his company (the dwarves), Gandalf (the wizard), and Bilbo gets caught by goblins in a cave they slept in without knowing that that was a recently made door by the goblins. They got whipped and tied by the goblins, and was brought to the Great Goblin, the king or the leader of the goblins who lived in the tunnels of the Misty Mountains. Before being brought there, Gandalf killed some of the goblins with his magic flash and slipped out, and this made the Great Goblin very angry, because he hated almost everything and was very bad-tempered, even without any problems like this.
"Up to no good, I'll warrant! Spying on the private business of my people, I guess! Thieves, I shouldn't be surprised to learn! Murderers and friends of Elves, not unlikely! Come! What have you got to say!" The Great Goblin said that after finding the dwarves. Page 75.
He really hated intruders too, and he said that if they were not intruders, he would let them go, but this hope of being set free was gone; the Great Goblin found Orcrist and Glamdring, the weapons made in the war of Gondolin, which was used to slice and kill the goblins. Because of this, he ordered his goblins to trap them in the most darkest part of his mines and let them to never see the light again, but then all the lights and torches went off, which made them see nothing. Suddenly the Great Goblin fell dead, and the lights and torches went back on which revealed Gandalf. Gandalf helped them escape from the goblins, and Thorin, the dwarves and Bilbo (riding on the back of the dwarves which took turns carrying him) ran. The goblins, having their leader killed by the wizard went frantic, and tried to catch and attack the dwarves and and the other two, but failed. So they sent their most quietest and fastest goblins to catch them, which they almost succeeded to but failed again because of Gandalf and Thorin's Glamdring and Orcrist. During that fight, Bilbo fell deep inside one of the tunnels and found Gollum, a very sly and hungry creature which was most likely to eat him.
The other obstacle (problem) was when they escaped from the goblin mines safely and found Bilbo, and then fell into a ring of trees, which was unfortunately the Wargs' (wolves much more bigger and more horrible than normal wolves) meeting place.
"Escaping the Goblins and caught by wolves!" Bilbo said that when he was distressed by getting caught twice. Page 115.
So the company climbed the trees and watched the Wargs who had a meeting about attacking one of the villages with brave people (who was scum to them) and killing all of them. The goblins were supposed to come to the meeting too, but they were busy because they were in panic by the appearances of the dwarves, Gandalf, and Bilbo and the death of their leader. The Wargs would not let the dwarves, Gandalf and Bilbo go, because they didn't want their plan of attacking the village to be heard except for them and the goblins, which made them stay there until dawn (it was night time then, and the trees were a very uncomfortable place to be in during the night). The goblins came shortly after and saw the dwarves, the wizard and the hobbit. Gandalf was already attacking the Wargs at the time with pine cones on fire, and Wargs or wolves were terribly scared of fire. The goblins weren't scared of fire, so they just put out the fire easily and put dry leaves and other foliage under the trees making them burn, which would cause the dwarves, the wizard and Bilbo to fall. But luckily they were rescued by the great eagles who lived in the high parts of the Misty Mountains.

So these were the two obstacles, and I didn't need any other source instead of the book (The Hobbit) this time. :)

  1. Wow yoonji this is one of the longest post i have ever seen and you explained the obstacles and you did it with all the details, I have read this book and when you explain it is like you are J.R.R Tolkien and that is pretty hard because he uses extreme vocabulary plus he did make the middle earth story in his one world which makes it even HARDER to explain, so this is cool that you explained it so detailed and you did it as an essay, Incredible Yoonji incredible. good job
P.S epic picture (is it from the trailer for hobbit 2)
